Operator
Cinematography
The cinematography in the short film emphasises the protagonist's isolation and vulnerability through careful framing and camera movement. The use of tight close-ups capture subtle face expressions, which allow the audience to engage with the emotional tension and protagonist's inner thoughts. Slightly off-centre compositions create a sense of unease, reflecting the disorienting nature of her interactions over the phone. Low naturalistic lighting is used to make the situation feel real and therefore we the audience can empathise with the protagonist.
Sound
The sound design in Operator plays a significant role in building tension and shaping spectatorship. Diegetic sounds are used, for example, the ringing phones, background office chatter and distant traffic are used to highlight the protagonist's heightened awareness and stress. Silence is used strategically, often following moments of confrontation, to emphasise her isolation and feeling of helplessness, being on the other side of the phone.
